No Rest for the Cyber-Wicked in 2018, Security Researchers Warn

After an active year in 2017, with some of the biggest hacks in history, businesses shouldn’t expect any relief in 2018 from cybercriminals, according to security experts. In fact, 2018 is likely to result in more advanced attacks than ever.

Research from several cybersecurity firms predict that hackers have no intention of letting up in their lucrative, disruptive cyber campaigns. One report, issued by McAfee Labs, predicted that attackers will leverage connected devices, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in order to disrupt commerce. The firm warned that this would have the effect of making social engineering efforts more difficult to detect and signal a new wave of ransomware-style attacks.

Webinar Date: Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. ET

Insurers have a multifaceted challenge to quantify cyber risk for their customers and it’s critical to identify the right data sources. Cyber insurance represents a newer reality of risk and unlike fire or earthquake insurance, it is far more complex to measure cyber risk owing to the lack of historical data.

Sponsored by Symantec, this one-hour webinar will help risk professionals understand the most important data sources cyber insurers need to consider to accurately and efficiently assess cyber risk.

Cyber Market Could Offer Policy Limits Up to $1B in Five Years, Say Top Execs

NEW YORK — The cyber insurance industry has a long way to go toward offering the capacity and coverage the market needs, but the journey has begun, according to experts speaking during Advisen’s Cyber Risk Insights Conference in October.

Dominic Casserley, current president and deputy CEO of Willis Towers Watson, told a packed room that he expects the industry to find its way on cyber, including building the capacity for a $1 billion policy within five years. This would double reportedly-available per-policy limits.

“The top of the mountain is still shrouded in clouds,” said Casserley, who said he doesn’t expect the major players in the market to change. “We’re in the foothills, there’s a lot of work to do, but we know the path we’re going to go down.”

Cyber Insurance Market’s Sustainability Questioned by Ratings Firm

Cyber risk could become the next “mega-catastrophic loss” for the insurance industry, according to a recent report from Kroll Bond Rating Agency, which sounded an alarm on inconsistencies and confusion surrounding cyber insurance and recommended that only insurers with significant capital and expertise enter the business of underwriting cyber risk.

“While the industry is looking at cyber insurance as a possible growth opportunity, insurers must not lose sight of their own cyber security,” Kroll wrote in its report. “Late in 2015, the NAIC adopted a Cybersecurity Bill of Rights, designed to protect consumers. At that time, Commissioner Hamm said, ‘Consumers have a right to expect their personal, financial and health information entrusted to the insurance industry is secure.’
