With Targets on Their Backs, Healthcare CISOs Fight to Protect Data

Healthcare chief information security officers (CISOs) know their organizations offer an appealing target for cybercriminals – and they’re doing everything they can to avoid being the next victims, according to a panel speaking during Advisen’s Cyber Risk Insights Conference here.

Panelists described the many moving parts to their organizations, with hundreds of healthcare professionals requiring access to sensitive information, cross-border compliance issues, legacy IT systems and medical devices, and vast networks of third-party partners.

“It’s really hard to go to a doctor who’s an expert in his field and say he needs to get rid of his X-ray machine that runs on Windows XP or Windows 98 when he says that’s the system that gives him the image he needs to save the patient,” said Robert Hill, CISO of the Mayo Clinic.”

Public-Private Partnership is Key to Combating Cybercrime, Says UK Report

A joint assessment by the United Kingdom’s (UK) National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Strategic Cyber Industry Group (SCIG) calls for a stronger partnership between business and law enforcement to combat cybercrime.

Cybercriminals Stole More Than Data in 2015: Kaspersky Report

Mobile devices and financial institutions became primary targets for cybercriminals to steal money directly from individuals in 2015, according to a new report from Kaspersky Labs, which took a look at the type of cyber events that occurred most frequently this year and made predictions for the future.

While data breaches at large retailers seem to grab headlines and prompt litigation, Kaspersky found that targeted advanced persistent threat (APT) attacks against banks, government agencies, and other high-profile organizations rose in 2015. Not content to steal names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and other personally identifiable information, criminals interested in money and state secrets more assertively entered the cyber fray this year.

Prescription for Trouble: Healthcare Industry Faces Rising Risk, Rising Losses

As personal health information (PHI) reaches a new level of popularity among cybercriminals, the healthcare industry finds itself at a challenging crossroads – how to deflect cyber attacks while following regulatory standards and keeping information accessible for medical professionals and patients.

Several recent studies, as well as Advisen data, illustrate the problems faced by healthcare entities. Medical identity theft skyrocketed over the last few years, with a McAfee Labs report estimating that a single health credential can sell for 10 to 20 times as much as a credit card number on the darknet. Medical ID theft can be both harder to detect and prevent, costing consumers thousands of dollars to resolve.
